Review: City of Ashes

City of Ashes

(Book 2 The Mortal Instruments)

By Cassandra Clare

Paperback, 453 pages
Urban fantasy where all the stories are true

Published by Margaret K. McElderry Books
Released March 25, 2008

My Summary:
Normal is not a word in Clary’s vocabulary anymore. How can it be when your mother is in a coma, you’ve found out you’re a shadow hunter, and your demented father is still plotting to destroy the known order of the world? Top all of that off with the fact that the inquisitor sent by the Clave doesn’t believe a word Clary, Jace, or any of the others say, and you’re destined for trouble.

My Review:
In many ways, this novel is just as good as the first, if not a little better – something that is not always achievable in sequels, but Cassandra Clare does it marvelously. As with the first, the book is a ton of fun to read – even though she keeps slapping you in the face with uncomfortable plot points (They’re pokey).

The characters in the story have managed to grow throughout the two books, where they could easily have plateaued, but Clare throws enough conflict at them to keep them from stagnating, and the characters she adds in this book only serve to enlighten us to the motivations and concerns of the characters we already knew.

As with the first, it leaves you hanging on for the next, but this time I do not find the ending so unsettling as the last – at least this time around the good guys technically won.

And I’m so happy that Simon came to his senses! I hated that he spent so much time pining for Clary when it was clear that was never going to work. I love simon’s character. I want him to be happy, and I don’t see that happening with Clary.

Buy, Borrow, Brush Past:
This story still isn’t finished, but if you like the first book enough, I’d consider buying the whole lot. They’re entertaining, and while there are some plot elements that are unsettling, it’s something you can easily get past and find yourself lost in the world.
